It has been said that to truly appreciate the depth of God’s love, we must grasp the chasmic divide between an offensive sinner and a holy and righteous God. With such an understanding, we approach Paul’s words to the Colossians with amazement:
The word “rescue” carries the idea of helplessness. A person who is rescued is totally dependent upon another to bring them to a safe place – there is nothing they can do of their own strength or ability. Across such a separation, God rescued us though the works of His Son, our propitiation, that we might come into His presence as Christ presents us holy, blameless, and beyond reproach (Col 1:22).
